Living in the United States, Sumire has often seen Japanese characters used in fashion, artwork, decorative objects, and tattoos.

As someone deeply trained in Japanese calligraphy, Sumire could immediately see when a character lacked the form, proportion, balance, and quality of brushwork that give Japanese calligraphy its beauty.

She also encountered tattoos and designs in which Japanese characters were incorrectly written, incorrectly used, or visually poorly formed — sometimes permanently tattooed onto someone’s body.

To Sumire, the meaning of a Japanese character is only part of its beauty.

Its form matters.

The proportions matter.

The balance matters.

The movement and direction of every brushstroke matter.

The relationship between strength, delicacy, rhythm, and empty space matters.

A character can be technically recognizable and still lack the visual integrity and artistry of beautifully executed Japanese calligraphy.
